: The Mustangs lost a lot of production in the off-season. Jimmy Phillips Jr., Isaac Slade-Matautia and Shanon Reid were first, second and fourth on the team, respectively, in tackles a season ago. The trio combined for 211 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions.
In terms of returners, SMU pretty much only had former Minnesota transfer JaqWondis Burns, who recorded 12 tackles last season.That makes former Liberty linebacker Ahmad Walker perhaps the most important transfer portal addition. Walker played for SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons as a true freshman at Liberty. He recorded 100 tackles and 16.5 tackles for loss in two seasons there. Wilson started for Temple last season. He had 64 tackles last season.
