Smokey and the Bandit was a certified 1970s comedy classic, and its cast was packed with superstars and future icons of the big screen.
Smokey and the Bandit was one of the biggest surprise hits of the 1970s, and its cast was packed with superstars and future icons of the screen. Released in 1977 to decent reviews, the film's real power came from its cultural impact and overwhelming popularity with audiences. The movie was non-stop action that found a way to blend its car-centric narrative with a fair amount of humor and character as well.
Following his turn as the Bandit, Reynolds found great success making other films with director Needham, and projects like The Cannonball Run in 1981 were smash hits for the duo. Besides his typical action/exploitation roles that made him famous, Reynolds also began taking on more serious roles as he got older, and was even nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn in 1997's Boogie Nights.
Smokey and the Bandit was only Field's third feature film role, and she quickly pivoted her success on the big screen into Academy Award gold when she won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1979's Norma Rae. She would win that award again for her turn in 1984's Places in the Heart, and by the mid-'80s Field had given some of her best performances.
Gleason reprised his role as Sheriff Justice in the two theatrically released Smokey and the Bandit films, and he made a handful of major appearances throughout the 1980s. Besides sporadic TV spots as himself on various talk shows, Gleason appeared in one of the best Richard Pryor movies when he co-starred in the 1982 comedy film The Toy. Gleason made his final on-screen appearance in the 1986 film Nothing in Common opposite a young Tom Hanks.
