“Years of vegetation accumulation presents a significant wildland fire threat to the surrounding residential community,” the department wrote in a release. “The reduction of fuel load, through a prescribed fire, is the appropriate safety step in protecting surrounding residents and their homes.” People could see smoke as a result of the burn at the arboretum, which is near IH 610 West Loop and Woodway Drive. If you’re close to the site, the department advises holding off on calling 911 about it.Drivers should slow down and use their vehicle’s headlights amid smoke, according to the department. They should also keep an eye out for posted reduced speed limits.
“Nearby roadways and trails may be posted with signs indicating ‘prescribed fire ahead,’” the department wrote.
