A Washington, DC, zoo welcomed a newborn western lowland gorilla Saturday — an exciting addition to the critically endangered species.
The gender of the newborn has not yet been discovered — zoo staff is leaving several days of distance between themselves and the mother-child pair in order to let them bond. The western lowland gorilla was born Saturday at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, DC.The newest member of the clan — which zoologists are “cautiously optimistic” will survive — was also born following the same guidelines.
