Smithson Valley wins first Class 5A state championship after finishing second last season
GEORGETOWN – The final round of the UIL Class 5A boys golf state championship wasn’t as much a competition as a coronation for Smithson Valley on Tuesday at Legacy Hills Golf Club . The Rangers built on their 11-shot lead after Monday’s first round and carded golf’s equivalent of a slam dunk with a 294 on Tuesday for a two-round 572 in winning their first state championship in program history by 14 strokes.

Frisco Wakeland, which trailed the Rangers by 11 strokes on Monday, recorded a 297 on Tuesday and ended up in second with a 586. “We’ve been saying all year that we needed to come together at the right time,” McIlwain said. “We all played like No. 1s both days. … We knew what we came back here for after finishing second. We knew we had to get the job finish.
Smithson Valley boys golf has golden goal San Antonio Johnson was in medal contention for most of the 6A tournament at White Wing Golf Club. The Jaguars shot 583 to finish fifth. Lake Travis was the winner , followed by The Woodlands , Houston Memorial and Dallas Highland Park . The UIL state golf tournaments conclude next week with the girls competition. Alamo Heights is aiming for a third 5A state title in four years.
