Smithson Valley continued its hot start to the season, defeating Veterans Memorial 9-6 in a District 26-5A contest on Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial High School. The win came a day after the Rangers beat Wagner 10-0, with Wednesday’s game moving from Thursday due to rain forecast. Smithson Valley coach Amanda Wolf liked that her team was exposed to harsh conditions early in the season. “Playing back-to-back days is tough,” Wolf said. “I would be lying if I didn’t think it wouldn’t be.

Haun and the Smithson Valley defense forced the Patriots (15-4, 3-1) to go up three up and three down in five of the first six innings, resulting in a commanding 9-2 lead entering the final frame. “I owe it all to my team because whenever the ball was hit in the air, I relied on them to catch it,” Haun sai
