The No. 1 team in the nation isn't grabbing all the headlines now but focused on the big one at Final Four at NRG.
Tramon Mark , Jamal Shead and the Cougars have had plenty to celebrate this season but the bigger goal is still to come: the Final Four at NRG.Kelvin Sampson’s University of Houston Cougars just keep winning and winning and winning. And the No. 1 college basketball team in America is marching toward the Final Four in Houston.
Actually, UH already has two nine-game winning streaks this season — a tough home loss to Alabama currently divides the schedule — and it’s already getting to the point where we’re taking Houston’s Cougars as the No. 1 team in the country for granted. But the reality is that regular-season college basketball hasn’t driven the national sports conversation for years. When UH, Purdue, Alabama and Xavier are at or near the top of the college game — while Duke and North Carolina can’t even make the top 25 — it’s guaranteed to be an all-football world until March Madness takes over our sporting lives for a weeks.
Factor in that Sampson and Co. have been building toward this season for years — Final Four in 2021, Elite Eight in 2022 — and it’s a literal countdown in late January toward April 1 inside NRG Stadium. The last time that I drove to Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Lovie Smith was still the head coach of the Texans and a Final Four countdown billboard towering near Minute Maid Park was the best part about the drive.
