Smith and Starc in Aussie double injury blow as Marsh lands second captaincy gig
Mitchell Marsh will captain Australia in both the T20 and ODI matches in South Africa after Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc were ruled out through injury.
Smith has a tendon injury in his left wrist which requires the wearing of a splint and a period of rehabilitation while Starc is experiencing some groin soreness since returning from the gruelling six-Test tour of the UK. Cummins will travel to South Africa but won’t play leaving Marsh to captain the team in three T20s and five ODIs.Test star Marnus Labuschagne, who was left out of the 15-man World Cup squad, has been called up to play in his country of birth and could yet force his way in.
“The compacted Ashes series and the World Test Championship was a heavy load for the group, and we are taking a conservative approach to the build-up to the World Cup,” Bailey said.
