Using rainwater harvesting and capillary irrigation, researchers were able to reduce artificial turf temperatures from 98.6 degrees to 144 degrees Fahrenheit.

Researchers at the KWR Water Research Institute in the Netherlands have shown that a subsurface water storage and capillary-based irrigation system can make artificial turf much cooler and safer to play on. The researchers recommend this easy-to-implement system, especially in urban areas where demand for space facilities is high but space is scarce.

“Natural grass can only support a limited number of play hours per week and needs recovery time in-between use,” said Marjolein van Huijgevoort, a hydrologist at KWR Water Research Institute, in an email to Interesting Engineering. “Natural grass needs time to drain after rain events before it can be used again.”

At these temperatures, users are at severe risk of getting burn injuries. Worse still is the risk of getting heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, which can also be life-threatening. The layer contains cylinders that transport this water back to the artificial turf, where it evaporates and cools the turf. “Natural processes and weather conditions control the process of evaporative cooling and capillary rise, so water only evaporates when there is demand for cooling,” explained van Huijgevoort in a statement.
