Its wreck, discovered in 1973, and artifacts, including the turret and guns, are exhibited at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia, marking its historical significance.are primarily designed for coastal, riverine, and harbor defense. The main objective of these vessels was to provide a naval platform that combined heavy firepower and armor protection in a compact and maneuverable package at a relatively low cost.
Monitors have played significant roles in various conflicts throughout their service history. Unsurprisingly, given their design, they were instrumental in rivers and coastal waters where their capabilities could be effectively utilized. As naval warfare tactics and technologies changed, monitors adapted accordingly.
