PIUTE COUNTY, Utah — A plane went down in a mountainous area of central Utah on Sunday and started a fire, which was fortunately contained quickly.
Officials said the small plane crashed around noon near Anderson Canyon on Monroe Mountain, just south of the Sevier-Piute county border. The plane was a 1968 Cessna 172 — a single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft. There was a 59-year-old man and an 88-year-old man on board, according to the Piute County Sheriff's Office. The 88-year-old was airlifted to Utah Valley Hospital in unknown condition; the other man was driven from the scene in a personal vehicle.
The sheriff's office said the crash sparked a small wildfire, but it only spread to about one acre before firefighters contained it. The other responding agencies included the Marysvale Fire Department, the Monroe Fire Department, Utah Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Forest Service. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Photos from the scene show that there was very little left of the aircraft after the fire was extinguished, other than red wingtips visible in the wreckage.
