A small plane carrying 10 people vanished over Alaska on Thursday afternoon, sparking a large-scale search and rescue effort. The aircraft, a Bering Air Caravan, was en route from Unalakleet to Nome when it lost contact with authorities. The search is hampered by challenging weather conditions, but rescue crews continue to comb the coastline for any sign of the missing plane.
A small plane carrying 10 people went missing over Alaska on Thursday afternoon, prompting an intensive search by rescue crews throughout the night. The Bering Air Caravan, en route from Unalakleet to Nome with nine passengers and a pilot, disappeared from radar less than an hour after takeoff. Authorities are working to determine the aircraft's last known coordinates. Initial reports indicated the plane was 12 miles offshore when contact was lost.
The Coast Guard and local fire department launched a search effort, scouring the coastline from Nome to Topkok. Due to challenging weather conditions, including light snow, fog, and frigid temperatures of 17 degrees Fahrenheit, air search operations were limited. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department urged the public not to form their own search parties due to the dangerous weather conditions. The identities of those onboard have not yet been released. This incident marks the third major aviation incident in the U.S. in just eight days, following a collision between a commercial jetliner and an Army helicopter near Washington, D.C., and a medical transportation plane crash in Philadelphia. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew is en route from Cold Bay to assist in the search effort. The National Guard and state troopers are also involved in the ongoing search operations
