Some small industrial gas users are still dealing with month-by-month supplies at high prices, almost four months after the cap on wholesale prices was imposed.
Origin Energy and Shell have resumed offering gas contracts to small business customers but some manufacturers on awkward parts of the east coast grid are still stuck on one-month contracts at prices that one described as “horrendous”.
Mr Macfarlane said the prices being offered were almost half the maximum levels seen last year, at “towards the $18 [a gigajoule] range”, compared to offers of as high as $35/GJ last year. But the broker said the gas volume available was limited given the size of the domestic market, and some retailers were still not making offers, with the result that competition in supply was still limited.
But almost four months since the price cap was legislated, some small manufacturers are yet to feel any benefit.from its existing retailer, unable to get offers from others, and at prices in the $20 to $30 per gigajoule range, more than double current spot prices.“It’s now four or five months since the price caps came in, and they have had no effect,” Mr Flicker said. “The prices are just horrendous.
Not all retailers can offer gas to customers in all parts of the gas grid, with that ability hinging on access to pipeline capacity, for example.
