Slushies, ice vests and frozen energy gels: The stifling conditions in Tokyo made it imperative that U.S. triathletes find a way to chill down as bike, swim and run their way through the Olympic triathlon course

ODAIBA BEACH, Japan—When Team USA’s pair of male triathletes jumped into Tokyo Bay for the swimming portion of their race on Monday morning, John Farra was there to play mixologist. As high performance director for USA Triathlon, Farra is in charge of keeping the five Americans cool on the course in this city’s punishing heat and humidity.“There’s actually science behind the fact that a slushy is actually colder than the coldest water,” said Farra.

In addition to slurping up the Gatorade version of an Icee on the 40-kilometer bike course that wound eight laps around Tokyo’s Odaiba Island, Kevin McDowell dumped cold water bottles on his head and knocked back frozen energy gels while staying in hot pursuit of the lead pack on the 10-kilometer run.

“I had a headband, I had some ice things in my hands,” said McDowell after the race on Monday. “I was not at any point like, ‘I’m overheating or overcooking.’”
