A wired rope, weighted down by a small rock was found inside the 2.6m reptile, whose body was found in the Ross River near Townsville.
A crocodile likely died a "slow, agonising death" after being baited with a poaching hook in a Queensland river, authorities say.Crocodiles are protected and anyone who deliberately harms or kills them could be fined more than $30,000 in QueenslandThe 2.6-metre saltwater crocodile was found upside down in mangroves on the Ross River in Townsville on August 15.When the rope was removed from the crocodile's digestive tract wildlife officers found that it was attached to a large hook.
"They believe the hook was baited in a deliberate attempt to target and kill the crocodile," senior wildlife officer Tony Frisby said. "The wired rope was set up in a similar way to devices used by poachers and wildlife officers are conducting further searchers of the surrounding area for other hook devices.The rope and hook were weighted with a small rock.The Department of Environment and Science is urging anyone with information about the hook device or the death of the crocodile to come forward.The maximum penalty for the deliberate harm or killing of crocodiles in Queensland is $32,243.
