Margaret Miles-Bramwell, the founder of the popular weight loss organization Slimming World, passed away on Sunday at the age of 80. Miles-Bramwell, who built the company from a church hall in Derbyshire in 1969, was known for her compassionate approach to weight management and her pioneering work in establishing NHS weight management referral schemes.
Miles-Bramwell died on Sunday morning surrounded by her family in Majorca after she had "touched the hearts and changed the lives of millions of people", the company said in a statement. Slimming World managing director Lisa Salmon said: "Margaret steered her ship in the way she lived her life - with a generous spirit, passionate conviction, a wicked sense of humour and a fierce belief in doing the right thing.
The programme encourages dieters to swap high-fat foods for low-fat foods that are naturally filling. "I really felt that we needed to treat overweight people with respect and courtesy and as adults and not as children who needed a slap or something. That was really what inspired me." It focuses on a diet of Food Optimising, where members are given a list of Syn Free food, that can be eaten in unlimited amounts.
