Tony Gemignani has created two limited-time pizzas inspired by Giants pitchers, which customers can order through mid-September
A local renowned pizzaiolo and the San Francisco Giants are teaming up once more to shine a light on a Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to providing specialized medical care to mitigate the suffering of children and young adults with serious medical conditions.
Tony Gemignani, the owner of Slice House, and The City’s professional baseball team are currently holding their ninth annual Seasonal Pizzas fundraiser, in which Slice House partners with Giants baseball players to create limited-time pies. A dollar per slice or $6 per pie will benefit George Mark Children’s House, a San Leandro-based organization that provides medical care in a home-like setting at its East Bay facility and also works throughout the Bay Area. The Giants players in this year’s fundraiser are pitchers Logan Webb and Ryan Walker and their slices can be found now through mid-September at Tony’s Coal Fired Pizza and Slice House in North Beach, as well as Slice House locations in the Haight-Ashbury and throughout the Bay Area. Webb’s pizza — known as Webb’s Double Sausage — includes Italian and sliced link sausages, pepperoni and red onions among its toppings. Walker’s — called Walker’s White Pie — is served with alfredo sauce, ground beef, smoked bacon and green onion. Each costs $7.75 per slice and $46 for a whole pie. Shekinah Eliassen, the CEO of GMCH, said that the nonprofit’s partnership with Gemignani and the Giants is “about more than just pizza.” “It’s about community, compassion and creating moments of light for families navigating some of their darkest of times,” said Eliassen, whose newborn son passed away from a brain condition at GMCH in 2012 at three weeks old. GMCH’s services include respite care, where children receive medical treatment and participate in playful activities while their caregivers take a break from normal routines. The organization also offers transitional care after children are discharged from an acute care hospital, as well as end-of-life care where patients and their loved ones stay in family-style suites. Eliassen said that “as both a bereaved mother” and the organization’s CEO, she is"profoundly grateful for the ongoing support” from Gemignani and the Giants. Bobby Baksa, the Giants’ director of player, alumni and community relations, said that the Seasonal Pizzas fundraiser “is a great example of where you can go from year one to year nine.” Last year’s event raised close to $115,000, a dramatic increase from the fundraiser’s earliest days when it would raise “just a couple thousand,” Baksa said. Baksa said that the team and Gemignani are using their platforms “together to create a fun way for fans — and just pizza fans, in general — to support a nonprofit that a lot of people in the Bay Area don’t really know about.” Ex // Top Stories Opera Parallele gives Harvey Milk new voice in 'reimagined' opera Composer Stewart Wallace is once again telling the late San Francisco supervisor’s story — albeit in a much different world than he first did 30 years ago AI boosters’ climate claims warrant skepticism, critics argue AI critics say the version of the technology that’s driving emissions is not the same one that could help solve the problem Engardio recall qualifies for the ballot Petition to recall Sunset district supervisor succeeds with margin of about 6% above the required threshold for verified signatures Eliassen said that the pizza proceeds help the Children’s House “sustain our mission,” as well as enable the nonprofit “to provide a sanctuary of love, comfort and hope.” The fundraiser normally includes a special event at a Bay Area Slice House locations, allowing fans to meet Giants players and GMCH families. This year’s meet-and-greet will be on Wednesday at GMCH’s headquarters in San Leandro. At Wednesday’s event, Gemignani will teach guests how to toss pizzas, and they will also be able to sample the seasonal pizzas and get autographs. It lasts from 11 a.m. to noon. In a statement, Gemignani told The Examiner that the fundraiser’s cause “means so much to me personally.” Roughly 15 years ago, he was asked to make a pizza with a GMCH child, and Gemignani has been involved with the nonprofit ever since that moment. With Slice House celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Gemignani said that he and his team are “proud to keep shining a light on the exceptional care” that GMCH offers to kids and their families, while also helping “advance its mission through both awareness and financial support.” He called collaborating with Giants on the limited-edition slices “a highlight of my career the last nine years.” Baksa said that the Giants’ working relationship with Gemignani reflects a grassroots approach driving fans to either spread awareness or make a financial contribution to a specific cause. “Once you find out more information about George Mark, you’re going to be a supporter for life,” he said. “That’s one of the biggest things that I’ve seen come out of this.” The fundraiser, Baksa said, showcases the GMCH team’s dedication to their mission, as well as the attention to detail given to every family that walks through the doors. With a ninth year on the way and its tenth anniversary on the horizon, Baksa said he looks forward to seeing the fundraiser's future growth. “The way Tony is and the Slice Houses that he has all over the Bay Area, it’s just a fun program to be a part of,” he said.
