A new study reveals that getting enough sleep can significantly enhance your ability to learn new languages.
Good sleep is crucial for various reasons, and a new study highlights a compelling reason to prioritize eight hours of shut-eye each night. Research ers have discovered a significant link between sleep and language learning. An international team of scientists, led by the University of South Australia, found that the coordination of two electrical events in the sleeping brain significantly enhances its ability to remember new words and complex grammatical rules.
To investigate the connection between memory retention and sleep, researchers tasked 35 English-speaking adults with learning Mini Pinyin, a simplified language based on Mandarin. The language consists of 32 verbs and 25 nouns, including 10 human entities, 10 animals, and five objects, forming a total of 576 unique sentences. Participants were divided into two groups: one learned Mini Pinyin in the morning and had their memory tested in the evening, while the other group learned in the evening, slept overnight, and had their memory tested the next morning. Researchers also recorded the brain activity of the second group during sleep. The study, reported by SWNS, revealed that those who slept performed significantly better than those who stayed awake, as published in the Journal of Neuroscience
