This Saturday, April 9, 2016 photo shows the icons for Microsoft's Skype and Facebook's Messenger apps on a smartphone in New York. "Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts," the company wrote onMicrosoft said the change is due to communication evolving over the years and wanting to focus more on Microsoft Teams, their modern communications and collaboration hub.
Skype launched in 2003 and quickly grew as a way for people to make free calls worldwide. The company was bought by eBay in 2005 for $2.6 billion before 65% of its stake was sold to an investor group for $1.9 billion in 2009 and eventually ended up in the hands of Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion. “Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments, and we are honored to have been part of the journey,” Jeff Teper, president of collaborative apps and platforms at Microsoft said.
