Sky’s online service to be made available for people who don’t want to change their telly

, it felt like we’d got a glimpse of the future. The way these TVs allowed you to stream all of Sky’s previously only-available-via-satellite content direct to your TV, with no dish and no wired connections, and obtain all the convenience benefits of on-demand streamed viewing, was a revelation.

Cue an announcement by Sky today that it will be making the Sky Stream puck, a small external streaming box you can simply attach to your existing TV to get Sky’s streamed service, available as a standalone product at some point in 2022.... [+]The Sky Stream puck was actually revealed alongside the Sky Glass TVs last autumn. However, at that point the pucks were only available to people who owned a Sky Glass TV, but wanted to add Sky’s streaming service to other TVs in their home.

I expect this much-anticipated standalone Sky Stream puck to become hugely popular with new and existing Sky subscribers alike when it finally arrives. Especially with people who live in blocks of flats or other places where fitting a dish outside the house maybe isn’t allowed or possible. The Sky Stream puck obviously doesn’t carry a built-in Dolby Atmos speaker system like the Sky Glass TVs do, and even more obviously doesn’t carry a built in screen! It is Dolby Atmos ready, though, meaning it can pass Atmos to devices capable of playing it; it supports 4K streams up to 60 frames a second; and it offers all the same interface options and features you get with Sky Glass - including Sky’s impressively comprehensive and bespoke voice command system.
