The clear skies we have enjoyed in recent months are likely to have caused the country's driest autumn since the one preceding our horror bushfire season of 2019-20, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne.

A wet and blustery start to the season eventually gave way to drier conditions as the new climate driver governing our weather started to suppress rain-making systems over eastern Australia.

Farming regions in the NSW ranges, Victoria and parts of SA have enjoyed above-average levels of rainfalls, but the east and west coasts have felt a fast drying trend. The lack of rain lead to cloud-free conditions, meaning the nights were much colder than average, but a healthy dose of sunshine during the day helped to warm things up. Darwin was a surprising standout, with days hovering around its average of 32C, but still the coolest start to the dry season since 2012.Brisbane and Canberra have had their fair share of cold weather in recent weeks.
