There's restorations - and there's 'irreparably damaged' restorations
, driven on PH almost four years ago. Just two were built back in the 1950s, but the dinky roadster wasn't the end of the 1100 OHC story, as Skoda also followed them up with a pair of coupes. As a car primarily designed for endurance racing, a roof made sense, improving both aero and conditions for the driver. Completed in 1960, the 1100 OHC Coupes raced until 1962. They were then sold after their competitive lives were run, but both were destroyed in accidents.
However, it isn't every year that Skoda Motorsport celebrates its 120-year anniversary, so a plan was concocted. And it wasn't a simple one. The frame of one of the destroyed cars was bought from a collector in 2014, along with the front axle and"other surviving parts.
The chassis and the engine weren't even the difficult bits; to keep weight low, the 1100 OHC Coupe's body was made from aluminium - hand-beaten aluminium, at that. This car uses the body of the first coupe, as the fire that claimed the second car meant the body was"irreparably damaged". But still, number one had still been in a road accident so needed work.
The results are sensational; it would be disappointing if all these years had produced anything less, but the little Skoda really is stunning to behold. Though now fully functional, and with one of the earlier Spiders still in use by Skoda in the Czech Republic, this Coupe will remain part of the Skoda Museum Collection. Given the work that's gone into it, the way it looks and the fact this really is now the sole survivor, nobody is going to blame them.
