The hottest April weather on record invaded parts of the Mediterranean but much of Europe is unusually cold.

A Saharan dust storm turned the skies red, as strong winds carried desert sand from Libya across the Mediterranean Sea on April 23. The thick veil of dusty haze first arrived in Libya early in the week, where the midday sky turned blood orange to deep red. But the blob was on the move, arriving in Greece and Turkey by Tuesday and Wednesday.
Both Niger and Chad set April high temperature records Wednesday. It was 117 degrees in Tillaberi, Niger, and 116.6 degrees in Bokoro, Chad,Afternoon highs surpassed 100 degrees unusually far north so early in the year, reaching parts of Turkey, Duncan noted. The 102.6 degrees observed in Cukurova, Turkey, on Wednesday became the country’s highest April temperature on record.
