A ski lift chair detached from the cable at Attitash Mountain Resort in New Hampshire, causing a 20-foot fall and injuring one person. The incident is under investigation by state authorities, who believe a mechanical failure caused the chair to dislodge.
New Hampshire authorities are investigating an incident at the Attitash Mountain Resort where a chair detached from a ski lift and fell approximately 20 feet, injuring a man. The incident occurred on Sunday around noon when a chair dislodged from the Flying Bear lift. First responders were called to the scene, and tramway inspectors with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office determined that the man was in the chair when it separated from the cable.
He was assisted by Ski Patrol and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All other individuals on the lift were safely unloaded after reaching the top. A preliminary investigation suggests that a mechanical failure caused the chair to detach from the cable. The lift manufacturer has been notified and is cooperating with the investigation. The lift remains closed until further notice. The National Ski Areas Association reports that fatalities involving aerial ropeways and chairlifts are uncommon. Between 1956 and 2024, there were 16 fatalities attributed to mechanical malfunctions of lifts, and 14 resulted from falls unrelated to mechanical issues
