The Skating Club of Boston is mourning the loss of six members who were aboard an American Airlines flight that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter over the Potomac River. The crash, which occurred Wednesday night, resulted in an estimated 67 fatalities with at least 28 bodies recovered. The club, known for its competitive skating program and producing Olympic champions, released a statement expressing their devastation and describing the close-knit community of skaters, coaches, and parents.

The Skating Club of Boston on Thursday released a statement mourning its members who were aboard the American Airlines flight which collided with a U.S. Army helicopter over the Potomac River. An estimated 67 individuals were involved in the crash which occurred late Wednesday night. At least 28 bodies have been recovered as of Thursday morning, and officials presume there are no survivors. The Skating Club of Boston describes itself as “New England’s most competitive skating destination.” The group boasts several world championships in different ice skating competitions and two Olympic skating champions. CEO and Executive Director Doug Zeghibe mourned the loss of club members aboard the American Airlines flight. Our sport and this Club have suffered a horrible loss with this tragedy,” he wrote. “Skating is a tight-knit community where parents and kids come together 6 or 7 days a week to train and work together.” “Everyone is like a family,” Zeghibe continued. “Of the skaters, coaches and parents on the plane, we believe six were from The Skating Club of Boston. We are devastated and completely at a loss for words.” The members aboard the flight, he said, were returning from U.S. Figure Skating’s National Development Camp following the U.S. Championships in Wichita, Kansas. The American Airlines flight was headed to Reagan National Airport just outside Washington, D.C. “This camp is for young competitive skaters of tomorrow with the most promise to be a champion of tomorrow," Zeghibe added. “The Club sent 18 athletes to compete at the U.S. Championships.
