Lions, off to a 6-1 start, soaring in confidence after competitive loss to Audubon
Gloucester coach Keith Gorman, in his second season as head coach, and his daughter Meghan, a junior back, are enjoying their time together, especially with the Lions off to a 6-1 start.To be sure, the Gloucester High Lions were disappointed by last Wednesday’s outcome against Colonial Conference Patriot Division rival Audubon.
Audubon applied pressure throughout the contest and had far more scoring chances, but the Lions did their best to limit them. Junior goalie Callie O’Connor had to make a couple big saves and got strong support from backs Meghan Gorman, the coach’s daughter, Catalina Santiago and Alexis Nelson. Junior midfielder Ava Rodgers was moved to the back line to lend support, as did Maya Beringer, normally an attacking midfielder.
Gorman took over the program after former coach Shannon McKinnon stepped down following the 2021 season, when the Lions went 8-14. They improved to 9-8-1 a year ago – their first winning season in years . With nine starters returning and two top-notch freshman prospects – striker Bailey Schoenfeldt and midfielder Grace Conley joining the mix, he was optimistic that the upward trend would continue.
This is actually Gorman’s second stint as a coach in the program. When he first started teaching at his alma mater fresh out of college, he assisted then-Gloucester head coach Jimmy Key, now the head coach at Sterling.A career 2,000-point scorer, Gorman is better known for his exploits on the basketball court, where and his twin brother Sean starred for the Lions in the 1990s.
“We focused specifically on defense and figured we might only get a few chances and we’d have to cash in on them,” Meghan Gorman said. “Those direct kicks – they’ll go in next time. I’ll practice them every day from now on.”“It’s an incredible experience and I’m just so thankful to have this opportunity,” he said. “To be side by side with Meghan, I’m just thankful every day. She could not be a better daughter or an easier kid to coach.
“When it comes to teams like Audubon, our philosophy is to bring toughness every second of the game,” Keith Gorman said. “We have to play as smart as we can.” Bridgeton sophomore Adelina Wilks has 23 goals through eight games and her four-goal outburst in last Friday’s 7-0 win over Buena helped her overtake Vernon’s Monica Curry for the state lead. Wilks is well on her way to shattering her mark of 35 goals from last season, which led all Cape-Atlantic League players.
