But lack of team success isn’t a disqualifier. After all, offensive tackle Joe Thomas was elected Thursday on the first ballot despite never playing a playoff game in 11 seasons with the Browns, who were more often than not the NFL’s standard for team ineptitude. But Thomas’ résumé with six first team All-Pro selections and 10 Pro Bowl trips helped overcome any shortcomings with team success.
Gates, a former college basketball player, had one of the greatest careers for an undrafted player, logging 16 seasons with the Chargers. He was on the All-2000s team, a three-time first team All-Pro and made eight Pro Bowls. He ranks seventh all-time in receiving touchdowns , 30th in yards and 17th in receptions . Gates’ numbers compare very favorably with those of the nine tight ends in the Hall.
