IOC president Thomas Bach is confident Brisbane remains committed to hosting the 2032 Olympics as the fallout from Queensland’s stadium pivot continues.
The International Olympic Committee has insisted it did not push for any particular stadium outcome for Brisbane 2032, saying the issue was entirely a matter for local Games organisers.
“As far as we’re concerned, this is a choice that has to be made by the local communities, and we will obviously adapt, whatever the size of that stadium will be, and whatever the location will be.” So, if Brisbane were to retain an oval stadium for cricket and AFL, the total cost of QSAC and the Gabba would be $3 billion – just $400 million shy of a new $3.4 billion Victoria Park stadium – and Brisbane would have no tangible legacy from either, according to the Quirk report.
“My initial discussions with the department are that a solution will likely involve enhanced bus routes and upgraded linkages to the rail network. This may include a bus layover facility at the venue and extensive traffic management plan for the duration of the games,” he said.“Preliminary advice is that a full metro station is needed, but I’m happy to work constructively with the council and Games partners … to further explore their options, including how metro could support the venue.
