The Philadelphia 76ers are converting Justin Edwards' contract to a standard NBA deal for the remainder of the season. Edwards, a former Imhotep Charter standout, has impressed in his limited time with the Sixers. The team also announced that Andre Drummond will be switching back to wearing No. 1.
The Philadelphia 76ers are set to convert former Imhotep Charter star Justin Edwards ' contract to a standard NBA deal for the remainder of the season, with a team option for the 2025-26 season, sources told The Inquirer. Both the Sixers and Edwards are reportedly interested in exploring a longer-term agreement during the offseason. Edwards, a 6-foot-6 forward, originally signed a two-way contract with the Sixers on July 4th after going unselected in the June NBA draft.
He has quickly made an impact, starting the past seven games and averaging 8.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 22 games. The 21-year-old, who hails from the Frankford and Uptown sections of Philadelphia, has shown the same confidence that made him the nation's third-best prospect coming out of high school in 2023. At Imhotep Charter, he averaged 17.9 points and 7.5 rebounds, leading the team to a PIAA Class 5A state championship and a No. 11 national ranking by USA Today. While his lone season at Kentucky had mixed results, averaging 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds before becoming the first top-three recruit to go unselected in the NBA draft, Edwards has proven his worth in the NBA. Meanwhile, Andre Drummond has switched back to wearing No. 1 for the Sixers after KJ Martin was traded to the Detroit Pistons and rerouted to the Utah Jazz. Drummond had worn No. 5 for the first 50 games of the season but decided to switch numbers after Quentin Grimes, acquired via a trade with the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, requested to wear No. 5. Drummond previously wore No. 1 for the Sixers during the 2021-22 season before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets. 'It feels right,' Drummond said of the switch. 'That's the number that I liked.' 'In honor of KJ, my brother, I really wanted the number, too, anyway. So I went back and got it.' 'So it's bringing back old vibes,' he added. 'I'm trying to bring back good times.
