With Joel Embiid out with an injured knee, the Sixers needed to add some help.
'// Pinned It feels like Buddy Hield has been a Sixers trade target since the 2016 Final Four. There’s a good reason for that. The formula for a team built around Joel Embiid is to surround him with as much space as possible.
Hield is one of the best in the NBA at providing that spacing. He’s a career 40 percent shooter from three-point range. Just as important, he’s as high of a volume shooter from deep as anybody in the NBA. For the cost of three second-round picks, the Sixers are acquiring a player who profiles and slots similarly to J.J. Redick during his Sixers years. Just listen to what former Sixers point guard T.J. McConnell had to say about his current Pacers teammate earlier this week. “To the normal person, I don’t think they realize how important Buddy Hield is to what we do,” McConnell said. “Even if he’s not shooting the ball. The attention he brings – and they can get messed up on defense – he’s the best in the league at it. We love having him out there.” It’s a move that suggests two things. One, the Sixers are a little more optimistic about Embiid’s prognosis than they have let on. Two, they have another move coming. Unless both are true, the move doesn’t make a ton of sense. They did not pay a huge price for Hield, who will be a free agent after this season. But it is still a price, and Hield alone isn’t going to solve the problems that have plagued the Sixers since Embiid went down with a meniscus injury. The Sixers desperately need another ballhandler to pair with Tyrese Maxey in the backcourt. And they clearly need some size to make up for all that Paul Reed and Mo Bamba lack. Both are essential if the Sixers’ plan is to avoid the play-in tournament and give Embiid a chance to come to the rescue once the playoff starts. – David Murphy'
