The Special Investigative Unit and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research say their partnership is a coordinated exercise to leverage technology in the fight against fraud and corruption.SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says the CSIR can provide the skills they need to combat crime in a digital world.
"We've got a lot of IT people that we are working with and we realised when we were doing other investigations that we are starting to see the movement of money, no more about just moving within a bank."We've got cybercrimes that are happening. We have got cryptocurrencies that are being used to siphon money and move money around," he said.
"And when we saw all of those we realised that we might have the IT people here but we've got people who's job it is to do research around these matters and we have seen with the CSIR the kind of expertise that they were using when we were having COVID, when we were having the unrest. "They were giving data to government and then a government institution it was easy for us to then join hands with them because we are both government institutions and we can work together."
