'It begs the question if that money might have been better spent on pro-active policing today,' he said.
DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has questioned the value of the £40million Operation Kenova, which hasn't led to any prosecutions. He spoke out after an interim report was published about the investigation into Stakeknife, the Army's top agent inside the Provisional IRA's internal security unit during the Troubles.
"Whilst having lessons to learn for the Government, the report reminds us that the intelligence agencies had infiltrated the PIRA to such an extent that they rendered the organisation almost inoperable," he said. Sir Jeffrey pointed out that £40 million is a "huge bill to investigate the activities of one agent in the PIRA".
