The holes formed Wednesday on Minnesota Drive and the Glenn Highway near Palmer.

Updated: 21 seconds agoA sinkhole that formed Wednesday, June 19, 2024, prompted the closure of the center lane of northbound Minnesota Drive at 26th Avenue, state officials say.

Repairs were underway Thursday after sinkholes formed on Minnesota Drive and on the Glenn Highway near Palmer, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. State transportation officials said they closed the center lane of northbound Minnesota Drive on Wednesday after a sinkhole formed near the intersection with 26th Avenue. All northbound lanes of Minnesota Drive will be closed Thursday around 7 p.m. so crews can carry out repairs, said transportation department spokesman Justin Shelby.

It wasn’t immediately clear how long repairs would take because crews will evaluate how extensive the sinkhole is once they excavate the area, though the fix could be complete by Friday, he said.traffic was reduced to one lane Wednesday on the Glenn when a sinkhole formed just east of the Parks Highway interchange, between the Matanuska Spur Road and Kepler Lake. The sinkhole was repaired and the road was fully reopened by Thursday morning, Shelby said.
