A sinkhole that closed the westbound lanes of East 15th Avenue between Lake Otis Parkway and Orca Street this morning in Anchorage is expected to cause changes in traffic patterns until the weekend.

Anchorage police issued an alert asking drivers to use another route as municipal street maintenance workers assess the situation. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collapse, said municipal Street Maintenance Manager Paul VanLandingham. Crews used a camera to investigate the full extent of the opening and analyze the cause, he said. They plan to rip up surrounding asphalt and make repairs to infrastructure if needed, he said.This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
