Single mother offered home 250 miles away - in County Durham

Hillingdon Council said there was 'no alternative' to housing the London mother and son in Horden.

Demi Longworth, who needs to leave temporary accommodation in Hillingdon, Greater London this week, has been offered a permanent home in Horden in County Durham.

In a statement, the authority said "offers out of borough are only made when there are no alternatives in Hillingdon"."I’ll be ripped apart from everything and everyone I know," she said.'Fundamental failure', the council moved her to temporary accommodation last week - but said it could not find anywhere permanent for her within its local authority area.

"There is a fundamental failure when a council compels a mother and child to choose between homelessness or being sent over 200 miles away.""Due to the high demand for affordable housing, this is not always possible.
