.KingCourtnie—who takes hair inspiration from Solange, and Black women from the ’70s—would say her biggest hair lesson is to “be your own idol.”
“When it comes to hair and skin, it's important to always lock water-based moisture in with an oil.” The hair hack she swears by is a twist/roller-set that results in a “messy fro.” “And this might be taboo, but when my fro is out, I don't sleep with a scarf or bonnet on. It messes the shape up! I sleep bare then fluff it out on the sides in the mornings,” she adds.
But no matter how “taboo” her favorite hair ritual might be, she knows just how important it is to have a routine at all, especially now with more time at home. “Twisting my hair feels therapeutic.
Aside from her meditative hair practices, she’s stayed grounded amid isolation and uncertainty with long showers and music: both writing her own lyrics and listening to favorites . “I love myself plenty and as an only child, alone time has never felt daunting to me, but throughout this quarantine I've certainly noticed some gaping holes in my confidence that I might have never confronted if it weren't for this extended period of stillness,” the singer admits.
As summer heats up, Courtnie is looking forward to rocking her signature blonde box braids and giving her fro a break. Music-wise, her ultimate goal is “to continue to grow a platform that allows me to contribute to the advancement of Black people across the diaspora.” She’ll be keeping up with her self-care, too: “I've become so much more proactive with self-care and self-love these days.”Where the magic happens.
