We chat with Barbie star SimuLiu about collaborating with Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, backflipping his way into a rivalry with Ryan Gosling, and challenging traditional gender roles,:
Barbie follows the titular character as she lives her perfect life in the perfect world of Barbie Land. When she faces a crisis of faith, Barbie begins questioning everything, leading to her being ejected from the utopian Barbie Land. Now in the real world, Barbie goes on a journey of self-discovery to find her place in the world as she learns what others think of her.
Screen Rant caught up with Simu Liu to discuss the new Barbie movie. He revealed how he inspired the dynamic between his Ken and Gosling's during a dance rehearsal. Liu also broke down the importance of representation in toys and how Barbie goes against traditional gender norms. I didn't realize that at the time, but we were in the middle of dance rehearsal, and our choreographers, Lisa and Jen, were looking for a move that swept across the screen and was acrobatic. I was like, "Alright, how about this?" I showed them something, and then they were like, "Oh! We've got to do this." And I remember Ryan was like, "[deep sigh]." That in and of itself was the perfect reaction, and then Greta seeing it was like, "That's it.
Simu Liu: Yeah, absolutely. I didn't really have a relationship with Barbie in the past, you know? I don't know about you, but I grew up in a society where traditional gender norms were pretty heavily enforced and were pretty prevalent. [We] were taught from a very young age, "Boys don't play with that,” and, "Boys don't wear pink." Colors became gendered; toys became gendered — all of these rules were imposed on us. And so, Barbie was not my toy.
Simu Liu: Can I quote any line from Forever Red? I don't know if I could quote it, but, "May the power protect us all," I mean, come on, man. That was the greatest crossover event in history up until that point. Pretty incredible that you're also a Power Rangers fan. It's one of the best films I've seen all year long. What did Greta Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie bring to this movie to take it to a whole new level of comedy and commentary?
