In a recent podcast, fans learned The Sims signature language"Simlish" is, for the most part, made up by voice actors. The Sims franchise has been around since 2000 and for the last 22 years has been keeping players entertained around the world using a language that sounds like complete gibberish. After all of these years, it is interesting to get a look at how Simlish came to be.
Simlish has become a staple for fans of The Sims. Many players know the iconic"sul sul" and"dag dag" expressions, as those remain the same, but other phrases and sayings are typically ever-changing. Other common phrases have been heard throughout gameplay, but there is no official dictionary that mentions what the different sayings or phrases mean. Many musicians have even translated their songs into Simlish for The Sims, including Bebe Rexha, as well as Katy Perry.
Another method Curtin used to create Simlish for The Sims was by having the voice actors play an improv game. One actor would think of a poem and then proceed to recite it, but all in gibberish. The second actor would then have to translate the poem into English for an audience. This game was helpful for Curtin and the voice actors moving forward because they could get an idea of what was being said while keeping it different every time.
Over the more than 20 years The Sims has existed, many players have learned how to understand their Sim without actually understanding their Sim. With the intonation of the voice actors alone, every Sim player knows what is trying to be portrayed by that Sim. With the hope that The Sims 5 is on the way soon, players will get a lot more Simlish in the years to come. .
