SOME 60 participants took home new insights on saving the environment after attending an urban gardening workshop by Consumers Association Penang .
CAP education officer N.V. Subbarow said many kinds of household waste could be composted into healthy soil, vermicast or fertiliser.“Kitchen, garden, organic and food waste can all be composted.“If organic waste is given to earthworms, they will eat it up, break it down and give us vermicast. “When compost is placed on top of soil, it adds rich nutrients which are used by plants for growth,” he said during the workshop recently.

Penangites should start this good habit of composting,” said Subbarow. “Currently, around 2,000 tonnes of waste, of which 800 tonnes is food waste, goes to our landfill every day.Article type: free
