The controversial end to the Swans-Adelaide game has prompted readers to respond.
The recent debate about the score review system, amplified by the Adelaide-Sydney debacle, fails to address the bleeding obvious. Two simple rule changes would improve the game immensely. By eliminating both the touched rule and the ball contacting the goalpost rule, the need for the vast majority of score reviews would disappear, as would much of the controversy.Nothing’s sacrosanct.
I played a few sports when I was young and in all cases, if the ball hit the woodwork on its way through the goal, it had no effect on the score. Why should AFL be different from soccer, rugby, hockey or water polo? Change the rules.The kerfuffle about the Adelaide goal misses the point. Sport is played by imperfect humans, including the umpires. If we want perfection, use AI. It is, in the end, a game and chance is one of the elements that makes it so compelling.
