WarriorNun showrunner SimonDavisBarry speaks to Screen Rant in-depth about Ava and the OCS' battle against the evil angel Adriel in season 2 of the hit Netflix series:
Warning: This Interview Contains SPOILERS for Warrior Nun Season 2Netflix's Warrior Nun is back for season 2, and series creator Simon Davis Barry hopes audiences will stream the new episodes in big numbers, much the way Warrior Nun season 1 was a surprise hit for the streamer during summer 2020.
And for us shooting, as you can see in the show, we spent quite a bit of time outdoors shooting locations. So although we had all the issues with masking, and protectiveness, and everything like that, I think it was probably better to be in Spain than in most places. And of course, the only other downside was when people on the show got sick, it became, obviously, a struggle to reorganize, shooting around that. But you know, that happens, no matter where you are with COVID.
Let’s talk about Ava. I love the journey she goes on in season 2. Can you talk about how, coming from season 1, you wanted her to grow as a person and as the Warrior Nun in season 2? You mentioned Alba being frustrated in season 1 by not having as much action. Was she chomping at the bit to finally have full-on superhero fight scenes in season 2?
Simon Davis Barry: We will. We'll put some BTS together because, obviously, we did a lot of VFX work on that fight sequence, and a lot of choreography, and a lot of camera trickery to make that work. But I'm really glad you appreciate it as the showrunner and also as the director of that scene. Their chemistry together is so good. The camera just loves them together. And you know, when I watched the first couple episodes of season two, when they were dancing in the Alps, and I said to myself, "This feels like a love story now." And then it actually tracks that way, and it pays off at the end.
We wanted it to feel a bit more holistic, and a bit more tied to her specifically. In another person, [the Halo] would work much differently. And you did see it in that flashback of Mother Superion when she had it. And again, the Halo isn't infinite, it does have its limits. And so we wanted to keep up that idea of the mythology of the Halo alive through that scene.
Lilith went through her own fantastic transformation and journey. At the end, when she fought Ava, it seemed to me that Ava slashing her with the Divinium sword kind of knocked her to her senses. You introduced Raya as basically the God figure from Adrian's realm. Can you talk a little bit about that character? We saw just little glimpses of her, especially towards the end.
