The mandatory Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card registration will help protect women and girls, said the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in time for the celebration of the National Women’s Month.
The mandatory Subscriber Identity Module card registration will help protect women and girls, said the Department of Information and Communications Technology in time for the celebration of the National Women’s Month.Despite the invaluable contributions, achievements, and successes of women across the nation, the DICT underscored that the sector remains to be one of the most vulnerable groups when it comes to rights violations even in the digital space.
“According to the United Nations , women and girls are using the internet with greater frequency during the pandemic, which makes them more vulnerable to cyber-harassment. This includes having received offensive and sexually explicit emails and text messages, and inappropriate advances on social networking sites,” said DICT, adding that the mandatory SIM Registration will help mitigate and eventually end these schemes.
“Through the SIM Registration Act, women and children will be protected not only from these violent and abusive exploits, but also from scams and fraudulent acts perpetrated through phone calls, text messages and online platforms,” it explained. During the Commission on the Status of Women held in New York, USA, DICT Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo stressed that ending the digital divide is necessary to bridge the gender gap.
The latest tally of SIM registrants has reached 41,471,503 or 24.54 percent of the nearly 170 million existing subscribers nationwide. Pursuant to the law’s implementing rules and regulations, the mandatory registration will end in 48 days.
