Silver in the bag: Tatjana Schoenmaker delivers SA’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics
Schoenmaker, who became the first local woman to win an Olympic swimming medal since Penny Heyns at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia, touched the wall in 1min 05.22sec.
American teenager Lydia Jacoby won in 1:04.95, while defending champion Lilly King of the US took bronze in 1:05.54. “This medal definitely means a lot for me, especially if I can try and bring hope our country. We are not going through the best of times at the moment but if this can just give a slight of hope for anyone out there that we can do it as South Africa, I am happy,” the bubbly swimmer told reporters at the medal ceremony.
