The Lampard Inquiry is investigating the deaths of people who were receiving mental health inpatient care in Essex between 2000 and 2023

Baroness Lampard took over as Chair of the Essex mental health inquiry after it was upgraded to statutory status by the Government last year The number of deaths being investigated by the UK’s biggest ever inquiry into NHS mental health services is likely to be “significantly in excess” of 2,000, its chair has announced. She said a total number of deaths had yet to be reached, but was confident that it would be much higher than the figure previously reported.

It was upgraded to a statutory footing last year, which means it has legal powers to compel witnesses to give evidence. The inquiry will sit for three days this week and also hear opening statements by lawyers representing the families and those representing Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. It will hear impact evidence from families and friends of patients who died, or evidence from former patients of the impact on their lives, between 16-25 September.

At its conclusion, the Lampard Inquiry is expected to make recommendations for improving NHS mental health care across the country.
