San Antonio is now under a winter weather warning through Thursday morning as a 'significant ice storm' moves through the region.
San Antonio area had been under a winter weather advisory
, but the National Weather Service now expects parts of the city and Bexar County will likely be impacted by periods of light to moderate freezing rain today. A weather warning is issued by the NWS when hazardous weather is occurring, imminent or likely. Potentially heavier rounds of freezing rain and embedded sleet Tuesday night through Wednesday are possible, especially in the Hill Country and along the Interstate 35 corridor. Parts of Bexar County may see up to a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation. A half-inch is possible in some areas north of San Antonio.
The NWS, however, says the downtown San Antonio area will likely not see much ice accumulation, if any at all. Officials are warning that travel may be hazardous at times. The weather service says freezing rain can be more dangerous than snow because ice can form on the pavement and cause falling tree branches and downed powerlines.
