Innovations, startling developments and a sprinkling of firsts marked the third season of the PBA in 1977.The Season, following Crispa’s epic Grand Slam title conquest, opened on April 17 and for the first time, three referees were called to officiate the games.
On July 12, a month after the country celebrated its Independence Day, Mariwasa beats Toyota, 121-114, to set the stage for its first even finals appearance. It was also the first time that Toyota missed a championship series following its previous sixth straight dates with Crispa since the league’s inaugurals in 1975.
The former collegiate MVP from Mapua outshone his celebrated Crispa teammate Atoy Co in a performance that at the end of the season earned him the league’s MVP, too.
