Eonta Space’s new show, “Is / Is Not,” features three artists whose work speaks to how viewers categorize what they see and what assumptions they bring to the proverbial table.
Friday marks the autumn-adjacent installment of quarterly JC Fridays, and with it, the opening weekend for Eonta Space’s new show, “Is / Is Not,” featuring three artists whose work speaks to how viewers categorize what they see and what assumptions they bring to the proverbial table.
For artist Michelle Mayer , who has a set of three different series in the show, in part that’s sifting through her heritage. “Aside from always having a sense of inbetween-ness, it’s also meant having a perceptive criticism of myself and my privilege but also of American and Western society at large,” Mayer said.
“So much of life experience is happenstance – who we meet, opportunities that we come by, and then those become what shapes our identities. In a similar way, the materials used to create these figures came to me as leftovers from other projects, remnants, and things others had discarded. Opening our eyes to these possibilities of connection is where we can find both the humility and beauty of the human experience.
“The boundary between abstraction and realism has dissolved over time within my creative journey, Mehrotra said. “Before delving into the world of flowers for my current series ‘Let Them Bloom,’ my canvas resonated with the melodies of music and the intangible energies that envelop us. Gifted with partial synesthesia, music unfolds as a vibrant spectrum of colors before my eyes.
