Sierra Nevada snowpack has reached 100% of the April 1 average after a series of big storms. However, hotter temperatures and potential water trouble are concerns for the future. Additionally, a pilot program in California will pay some community college students to attend school and do homework.
This year's rainy season started off warm and dry, but after a series of big storms, Sierra Nevada snowpack has reached 100% of the April 1 average. That's important because all that snow is a huge source of water for us and our landscapes. Even though we have an average snowpack, it’s possible we won’t see an average amount of runoff according to the California Department of Water Resources, in part, as a result of hotter than average temperatures causing greater evaporation.
Hot and dry weather showing up and stretching into next year's rainy season could put us in water trouble yet again. As California’s cost of living goes up, community college has become unaffordable for many students. As part of a $30 million pilot program, some California community college students will get paid by the hour to attend school and do homework. It focuses on students who are formerly incarcerated, like Richardson, as well as former or current foster youth, and those receiving CalWorks benefits, the state’s cash aid program for low-income adults with children
