Team Canada is now days removed from its heartbreaking defeat to the United States in the gold medal game at the Winter The game entered overtime tied at 1-1, and during the 3-on-3 period, USA’s Jack Hughes slipped a shot past Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington to secure the 2-1 victory — and the Americans’ first gold medal in 46 years.
The Canadians were without captain Sidney Crosby, who missed both the semifinal and championship games due to an injury he sustained in the quarterfinals. Still, Crosby remained with the team, dressed for the game, and accepted his silver medal alongside his teammates. Stepping in as captain was tournament MVP Connor McDavid, who tallied 13 points in six games for Canada. Following the loss, McDavid faced much of the backlash given the lofty expectations placed on him as the best player on the ice. However, Crosby. “To come into a tournament like this, with the best players in the world, and to elevate to the level that he was at is unheard of. “It’s something that’s amazing to see up close,” he added. “You feel for him just because he did so much and led in every possible way. We all want to win for each other — especially for him.”For McDavid, he’ll likely be right back at the Games in four years when the Olympics head to France. Crosby’s journey, however — after Olympic appearances in 2010, 2014, and this year — is more than likely complete, considering he would be 42 by the next Games.history, particularly in tournaments featuring NHL players. And it appears McDavid is well on his way to building a legacy of his own.“I don’t really think of it that way,” he said. “I was just so grateful to be part of this group. The way we played, the way we got better with every game — I thought that was so important. You can see it, you can feel it. I was thinking more about that and just being grateful, thankful to be a part of this group more than I was thinking about passing the torch.
