It's illegal in Texas to use public funds to pay abortion providers, so Austin is funding easier access to abortion care instead.

But opponents of the measure have accused the city of pulling a “political stunt” and violating the “spirit of the law.” 7/7 Nicole Hudgens, the policy director at the anti-abortion group Texas Values, said:"It is appalling the city of Austin doubled-down on its policies to ‘save the trees, kill the children.'"— Texas Tribune September 11, 2019 Texas is one of several Republican-led states that have in recent years sought to make abortion almost inaccessible.

Pregnant women in Texas need to visit an abortion clinic twice before they’re able to undergo the procedure. Texas law also prohibits private insurance from covering abortion care.
